The U.S. Department of Energy Approves Golden Pass LNG Terminal for Export

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has recently granted approval for the Golden Pass LNG terminal in Sabine Pass, Texas, to begin LNG exports, marking a significant step towards advancing American energy dominance under President Donald J. Trump’s administration.

Following the approval by Chris Wright, U.S. Secretary of Energy, the extension of the LNG export permit for the Golden Pass LNG terminal underscores the commitment to unleash American energy resources and streamline the LNG export review process.

The collaboration between Entergy Texas, Kinder Morgan, and Golden Pass LNG aims to support the growing natural gas demand in Southeast Texas and boost the region’s energy infrastructure. The Golden Pass LNG terminal, a joint venture between QatarEnergy and ExxonMobil, is expected to commence LNG exports later this year.

Upon completion, the Golden Pass LNG terminal will become the ninth large-scale export facility in the United States, capable of exporting up to 2.57 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas as LNG, contributing significantly to America’s energy exports.

Secretary Wright emphasized, “Exporting U.S. LNG supports American jobs, enhances national security, and reinforces America’s position as a global energy leader. President Trump’s commitment to energy dominance is being realized through initiatives like the Golden Pass LNG terminal.”

With Port Arthur serving as a strategic location for LNG exports, the investment in the Golden Pass LNG terminal is poised to meet the rising demand for LNG shipments. The terminal’s estimated annual capacity of 18 million tons positions it as a key player in the LNG market.

Following agreements between ExxonMobil LNG Asia Pacific and QatarEnergy Trading for marketing LNG volumes, the Golden Pass LNG terminal is set to play a significant role in the global LNG trade.

DOE’s approval of the Golden Pass LNG terminal marks a milestone in LNG export projects under the current administration, reflecting the administration’s commitment to energy development and security.

Acting Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Tala Goudarzi highlighted the significance of the Golden Pass project, stating, “Golden Pass was a pivotal project approved for non-free trade agreement exports during the first Trump Administration, and its imminent commencement of LNG deliveries is a testament to its progress.”

As the demand for LNG continues to rise globally, investments in LNG export terminals like the Port of Brownsville by companies such as NextDecade indicate a positive outlook for the LNG market’s growth in the future.
