Borr Drilling Faces Temporary Suspension of Operations for Three Rigs in Mexico

The Oslo and New York-listed offshore driller Borr Drilling is currently dealing with a notice of temporary suspension of operation for three of its rigs operating in Mexico.

The affected rigs include the 2017-built Galar, as well as the 2018-built Gersemi and Grid jackups. These rigs were initially secured through Borr’s Mexican joint venture Perfomex in October 2022.

These rigs, along with the Odin and Njord, were under contract with Pemex’s integrated well service providers Opex Perforadora and Perforadora Profesional Akal, with the contract set to expire in December 2025.

Borr Drilling has mentioned that the temporary suspension is expected to last until March 31, 2025, but there is optimism that some or all of these rigs may resume operation before this date based on discussions with their customer.

Temporary suspensions are not unfamiliar to Borr Drilling, as they previously faced a similar situation with their Arabia II jackup rig under contract with Aramco in November 2024, as well as the Arabia I rig in April of the previous year.

In more recent developments, Borr Drilling secured a $58 million deal for the 2011-built Norve rig from Vaalco Energy. This new contract will follow the completion of their current contract with Marathon Oil and is expected to commence in the third quarter of 2025.
