Mowi Chile Introduces Revolutionary Low-Emission Salmon Farming Installation

Mowi Chile has unveiled its groundbreaking low-emission salmon farming installation at the Huar Norte site, setting a new standard in sustainable aquaculture practices. This innovative system, developed in partnership with AKVA Group, integrates a floating solar-powered pen system to reduce the site’s carbon footprint.

The hybrid system at Huar Norte aims to significantly decrease diesel consumption, with an estimated saving of 139,200 liters per year. This reduction is projected to cut around 350 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, directly impacting Mowi’s Scope 1 emissions.

By shifting towards solar energy, the installation not only reduces environmental impact but also enhances on-site working conditions by minimizing boat traffic for fuel deliveries and eliminating noise from diesel generators.

Christian Schäfer, General Manager of AKVA Group Chile, expressed gratitude for Mowi’s leadership in adopting this innovative technology. He highlighted the importance of taking proactive steps towards sustainability in aquaculture.

Alotta Energy Chile, the provider of the floating solar hybrid system, emphasized the positive impact on reducing Scope 1 emissions through this project. By displacing a significant amount of diesel usage, the installation showcases a commitment to sustainable practices in the industry.

In June, Alotta Energy Chile introduced the country’s first floating solar installation at Mowi’s Isla Huar salmon farm in the Los Lagos region, further demonstrating the potential for renewable energy integration in aquaculture operations.

Earlier this year, Alotta collaborated with Emilsen Fisk to install a floating solar power plant at their facility in Båfjordstranda, marking a significant milestone as the world’s northernmost floating solar power plant.

This initiative underscores the industry’s shift towards cleaner energy solutions and highlights the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in aquaculture. Mowi Chile’s commitment to sustainability through innovative technologies sets a positive example for the sector.
