Norwegian Technology Company Vissim to Deliver Centralized Vessel Monitoring System to Qatar
Norwegian technology company Vissim has secured a contract to provide Qatar with a Centralized Vessel Monitoring and Alerting System (CVMAS). This state-of-the-art system aims to enhance safety and security for offshore assets, improve vessel logistics efficiency, and contribute to reducing CO₂ emissions while increasing maritime situational awareness.
CVMAS will offer comprehensive monitoring and alerting capabilities covering Qatar’s coastline and over 300 offshore assets. At the core of Vissim’s technology is a specially designed software platform that leverages millions of data points to provide a detailed situational awareness of the geographical area, enhancing understanding of maritime safety, security, and operational efficiency.
The data collected and processed by Vissim’s system will be transmitted to QatarEnergy’s Joint Operations Centre in Doha to support effective decision-making. The Joint Operations Centre, a collaborative effort among oil and gas operators in Qatar, facilitates real-time situational awareness and improves maritime coordination in Qatar’s waters.
Vissim is working as a subcontractor to Qatar-based Bin Omran Trading & Telecommunications, responsible for local project management and offshore installation oversight. The system is expected to be operational by the first half of 2025.
Benedicte Stiberg, Vissim’s regional director for the Middle East, based in Dubai, UAE, highlighted the benefits of their software systems, stating, “Our software systems provide a fully digitized and user-friendly overview of vessel traffic in Qatar’s waters, enhancing maritime safety for all vessels and infrastructure in the region. With 24/7 surveillance, the system continuously monitors maritime activities and utilizes an alarm mechanism to prioritize critical events, improving asset protection, maritime operations, and ocean space awareness across Qatar’s waters.”
