The Final Journey of the SS United States

The iconic ocean liner, the SS United States, embarked on her last voyage today, marking the beginning of a historic journey from Philadelphia to Mobile, Alabama. After years of uncertainty and preservation efforts, the vessel is set to undergo a transformation that will secure her legacy for generations to come.

Since her relocation from Pier 82 to Pier 80 in Philadelphia, the SS United States has been prepared for her tow to Mobile. Tugs and crews carefully maneuvered the nearly 1,000-foot liner across the Delaware River, positioning her for departure on Monday, February 17. The meticulous planning and coordination required for this momentous tow reflect the significance of this event.

On Monday morning, tugboats will guide the SS United States out into the Delaware River channel, navigating under various bridges along the route. The Delaware River Port Authority will coordinate bridge closures to ensure a smooth passage for the vessel, which is expected to attract attention and admiration from onlookers along the way.

The SS United States Conservancy, in collaboration with the ship’s new owners in Okaloosa County, Florida, will livestream the tow under the Walt Whitman Bridge, allowing enthusiasts to witness this historic moment in real-time. The meticulous planning and execution of the tow, utilizing a powerful tug and adjusting the route based on weather and currents, demonstrate the commitment to preserving the vessel’s legacy.

Upon reaching Mobile, the SS United States will undergo extensive remediation work at the Modern American Repair & Recycling Services facility. The removal of contaminants, preparation for reefing, and exploration of incorporating iconic elements into a visitor’s center signify a new chapter in the vessel’s storied history.

As the SS United States bids farewell to Philadelphia, a group of volunteers illuminated her bridge front in green as a tribute to the city’s football team. The vessel’s departure marks the end of an era, symbolizing the culmination of a journey that began 75 years ago at Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company.

Despite changing ownership and uncertain futures, the legacy of the SS United States endures as a testament to innovation and maritime excellence. From setting speed records to serving passengers with luxury and style, the vessel’s impact on ocean travel is undeniable.

As the SS United States embarks on her final voyage, the preservation efforts and plans for her future as the world’s largest man-made reef highlight the enduring legacy of this historic vessel. The journey from Philadelphia to Mobile signifies a new chapter in the story of the SS United States, ensuring that her memory will live on for generations to come.
